Millions of tourists flock to Italy every year to see the country’s myriad of historical landmarks and experience its unique culture. Two of the most popular destinations are Milan and Venice. But which city is better? Here’s a breakdown of the two cities to help you decide which is right for you.
My Personal Pick
My personal pick is Venice, as its such an iconic city. However, it depends on what you want from your trip, your tolerance for crowds, and whether its your first trip to Italy. Read on for more information to help you decide which city is better to visit, or which one to spend more time at.
About Venice, Italy
Venice is one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in the world. It is located in north East Italy on the Adriatic Sea. Venice is made up of a group of small islands that are connected by canals and bridges. The canals are what make Venice such a unique city. They are used for transportation instead of roads. There are no cars in Venice, only boats. People get around by walking or taking a boat ride through the canals.
Venice is known for its glassblowing industry and popular gondola rides through its many canals. Venice is also famous for its Carnival celebration.
About Milan, Italy
Milan, Italy is a beautiful and historical city. Located in the north of Italy, Milan is the capital of the Lombardy region. With a population of over 1.3 million people, it is also the largest city in the north of Italy.
Milan is known for its fashion, design, and cuisine. It is home to many famous fashion designers and luxury brands. The city is also known for its delicious food, with many famous chefs coming from Milan.
If you are looking for a city to visit that is full of culture and history, Milan is the perfect place for you. From its fashion and design to its food and wine, there is something for everyone in this amazing city.
Which Has the Better Hotels?
There are many factors to consider when deciding whether Venice or Milan has better hotels. Location is one important factor to consider. Venice is located on the picturesque Venetian Lagoon, while Milan is located in the financial district. Another important factor to consider is the type of hotel you are looking for. If you are looking for a luxury hotel, then Milan will have more to offer than Venice. However, if you are looking for a more romantic setting, then Venice may be the better choice.
When it comes to location, both Venice and Milan have a lot to offer. However, Venice clearly has the more iconic location, and many hotels have some sort of view over the canals. However, Milan is less expensive than Venice, so you’ll be able to get more value for money, and in turn could afford something a little nicer. Keep in mind though, both are major European cities so hotel prices will be a high in both places.
Who wins here? If you want a hotel with a view, its Venice. If you want value for money, its Milan.
Which Has the Better Food?
There’s no denying that both Venice and Milan are world-renowned for their food. But which city has the better cuisine?
If you’re looking for heartier, more filling dishes, then Milan is the place for you. The city is known for its risottos and ossobuco, as well as its famous panettone Christmas cake.
In contrast, Venice is all about seafood. Freshly caught fish and crabs are served up in restaurants all over the city – and there’s nothing quite like enjoying a plate of spaghetti alle vongole while watching the boats bobbing along in the canals.
So which city has the better food? It really depends on what you’re in the mood for. If you want a feast, head to Milan. If you want delicious seafood, stay in Venice.
Which Has Better Architecture?
Which city has the edge when it comes to architecture?
Venice is home to some of the most iconic buildings in the world, including St. Mark’s Basilica and the Palazzo Ducale. But Milan is no slacker when it comes to architecture either – just take a look at the Duomo, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in the world.
So which city has better architecture? That’s tough to say. Both Venice and Milan have a rich architectural heritage that is sure to impress, but it again depends on what you’re looking for. Milan has the better architecture if you’re looking at it from a historical perspective. If instead you want to see colourful buildings set amongst a series of canals, then Venice is better.
Which Has the Better Public Transport?
Both cities have extensive public transport networks, but there are some key differences between them.
In general, Milan’s public transport system is more modern and efficient than Venice’s. The city has an extensive metro system, as well as an efficient bus network. While Venice also has a good bus system, its reliance on water taxis can be problematic – especially during peak times when they can get very crowded.
Another advantage of Milan’s public transport system is that it’s much easier to navigate. The city is laid out in a grid pattern, so it’s easy to find your way around. In contrast, Venice’s labyrinthine streets can be confusing for visitors.
Which Has the Better Nightlife?
So which city has the better nightlife – Venice or Milan?
Venice is often thought of as a romantic city, and while that’s true, it also has a great nightlife scene. There are plenty of bars and clubs to choose from, and you can even go for a gondola ride at night.
Milan, on the other hand, is a more modern city with a lively nightlife scene. There are clubs and bars to suit all tastes, and you’re sure to find something to do no matter what time of day or night it is.
So the winner here is Milan if you’re looking for more options, including those that are less expensive. Otherwise Venice, if you’re hoping for views and don’t mind spending a bit more cash.
Which Has More Attractions & Things to do?
While both cities offer a wealth of history, art, and culture, Venice may have the edge when it comes to attractions. From the canals to St. Mark’s Basilica, galleries and nearby colourful towns, there is plenty to see and do in Venice. And let’s not forget about the gondolas!
Milan is no slouch when it comes to attractions either. There’s soccer, the Duomo – which is one of the most iconic buildings in all of Italy, and the city is also home to Leonardo da Vinci’s world-famous painting, The Last Supper.
Unless you’re a die hard soccer fan, super into art, or you’ve been to Venice before; Venice wins this one.
Which is Prettier?
Venice is often referred to as the “Floating City” because of its canals and picturesque bridges. The architecture is also quite unique, with its Venetian Gothic style buildings. And of course, there’s the added bonus of being able to take a gondola ride through the canals.
Milan, on the other hand, is known for its high-end fashion and design. The city is home to some of the world’s most famous fashion houses, as well as countless art galleries and museums.
But which one is prettier? Sorry Milan, but its Venice hands down.
Which is Best for Solo Female Travelers?
There is no easy answer when it comes to deciding whether Venice or Milan is best for solo female travelers. Both cities offer a wealth of activities and attractions, and each has its own unique charms. Ultimately, the decision comes down to personal preference.
Those who enjoy bustling city life may prefer Milan, with its world-class shopping and dining options. Venice, on the other hand, offers a more relaxed pace and stunning canalside views. Whichever city you choose, you’re sure to have an unforgettable experience.
Safety wise, solo female travelers may feel safer in Venice, as the city is primed for tourism. As you would anywhere, take precautions and watch your belongings. Both cities are pretty safe though.
Venice wins here.
Which is Best for Families?
There are many factors to consider when deciding whether to visit Venice or Milan with your family. Both cities offer a wealth of history, culture, and attractions, but each has its own unique character. Here are a few things to keep in mind when making your decision:
Venice is often called the “Floating City” because of its canals and bridges. This can make it a more challenging (and potentially wet!) place to visit with small children. But there’s also something magical about exploring Venice by boat, and the city’s labyrinthine streets can be fun to get lost in.
Milan, on the other hand, is known for its fashion and design. It’s a more cosmopolitan city than Venice, with plenty of high-end shopping and dining options. If your family enjoys spending time outdoors, Milan’s extensive parks and gardens are worth exploring.
Overall, if your children aren’t too young and prone to running off, Venice is the winner here.
Which is Best for Couples?
There’s no question that both Venice and Milan are among the most romantic cities in the world. But when it comes to planning a trip for two, which is better? Here’s a look at some of the key factors to consider.
Venice may be more famous for its canals and gondolas, but Milan is actually the better choice if you’re looking for a wider range of romantic experiences. The city is home to some of the best shopping and dining in all of Italy, and its historic landmarks are sure to impress. Plus, with less tourists than Venice, you’ll be able to enjoy quality time together without the crowds.
If you’re interested in the classic Italian tourist experience however, then Venice is the clear winner. The canals are beautiful, and its one of the most iconic cities in the world. Venice has a hop on a gondola and feed each other gelato through the canals kind of vibe that no other city can beat.
Which is Best for Older Travelers?
There is no definitive answer to this question as it depends on the individual. However, if we consider accessibility in terms of transportation, then Milan would be the better choice for older people.
In Venice the main mode of transport is the water taxis and walking around by foot. Depending on your ableness, this may be difficult for golden oldies. There are many bridges as well which have a slight incline. On the other hand, if you’re still quite mobile then getting around by boat can be a scenic experience.
Milan, on the other hand, is a large city with a complex public transportation system. This can be difficult to navigate if you are not used to it, but it is easier to catch a train than it is to catch a boat in Venice if the mobility in your legs is heading south.
Ultimately, the decision of which city is more accessible for older people depends on the individual and what their needs are. Milan might be the winner here if you have mobility issues.
Which is More Affordable?
While actually living in Milan can be slightly more expensive, for tourists, Milan is definitely the cheaper of the two. Keep in mind though that both cities are major cities, and will be higher priced than other small cities and towns in Italy.
In Milan, take advantage of free attractions like museums and churches. You can also save money on food by snacking at cafes rather than sit-down restaurants.
In Venice, even the basic hotels can be pricey, so book ahead and you can still visit without entirely breaking the bank. If you’re really struggling here, consider staying somewhere nearby and catching the train in for a day trip. And eat like a local by seeking out cheap, authentic eateries rather than tourist traps, of which there are many in Venice.
Which is Better for Luxury Travelers?
Venice is often considered the more romantic of the two cities, and it’s certainly true that its canals and gondolas make for a unique and memorable experience. But it can also be crowded and expensive, pushing up the costs for those looking for a luxury holiday.
Milan, on the other hand, is a bustling metropolis with plenty of high-end shopping and dining options. It’s also home to some of Italy’s most iconic sights, including the Duomo and Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper. And while it may not be as picturesque as Venice, it’s definitely more cosmopolitan and less crowded. You’re also more likely to get value for your money on luxury hotels here.
My pick here would be Venice if money isn’t an option. Otherwise if you had to choose between the two to splurge on, I’d recommend splurging in Milan, and saving in Venice (since its so expensive anyway). Both cities have a ton of luxury experiences to make them worthwhile though.
Can I Just See Both?
Yes, but if you have to make a choice, Venice may be the better option. It’s a once in a lifetime destination, and while Milan is definitely worth visiting, if you have to choose one then that choice may want to be Venice.
